This step-by-step document shows you how to install AvantGo Enterprise v4.0 sofware on your Palm OS mobile personal digital assistant (PDA) from a Macintosh-based (Mac OS 9.2) personal computer (PC). Please read all of the steps carefully as they are all important. If you encounter a problem during installation, please contact the Student Computing Support Desk by filling out an online form.

Step 1: Connect Your PDA to Your Mac-Based PC

1. After having installed your PDA desktop software on your Macintosh, connect your PDA cradle and PDA device to your Mac. (Follow the Palm manufacturer's instructions.)

Step 2: Install AvantGo 4.0 Software onto Your Mac

1. Download the AvantGo Connect Installer and save it to your desktop.

2. Double-click on the AvantGo Connect Installer icon which will take you through the installation process of AvantGo Connect for MacOS v4.0. If installation was not successful, try reinstalling the software by double-clicking on the icon again. If installation is still not a success, delete the icon and download the AvantGo Connect Installer again to your Mac.

3. Upon successful installation of the AvantGo Software, the following step leads you to prepare AvantGo .prc files to your Mac.

Step 3: Synchronize AvantGo Software

1. Place your PDA into the cradle.

2. Press the HotSync button on your cradle to synchronize the AvantGo software and .prc files to your PDA in Figure 1.

Step 4: Remove AvantGo Software from Your PDA

1. Turn on your PDA and select the Menu button shown in Figure 1 below:

2. Select Delete... from the App menu. Highlight and delete the AvantGo item. Do not delete the AG Connect item.

Step 5: Prepare AvantGo Enterprise (.prc files) for Your PDA

Note: This step is necessary because the "Consumer" edition of AvantGo does not offer all of the capabilities required by the MyCourses Mobile Site which uses the "Enterprise" edition.

1. Download and save the following 3 AvantGo .prc files to the Palm folder on your Mac at each link:
Mobilelink.prc
Avantgo53.prc
libmal.prc

2 . You will be prompted three times with the Install Handheld Files dialog box (Figure 4) to accept each of the .prc files. Click only Done on the dialog box for each .prc file.

Step 6: Re-Synchronize AvantGo Software & the .prc Files to Your PDA

1. Press the HotSync button on your cradle to synchronize the AvantGo software and .prc files to your PDA in Figure 5.

Step 7: Configure the AvantGo Software on Your PDA

1. Two applications icons, AG Connect and AvantGo, will appear on your PDA screen as below:

2 . Tap the Applications button (Figure 1 above) on your PDA. Tap the AGConnect icon. Click on the Settings... button and the AvantGo Connect Server Settings screen will appear as on the right in Figure 5 below.

Complete the Server Address/Hostname, Port, User Name, and Password fields with the following information:

Server Addr: mymobile.med.harvard.edu
Port: 8092
User Name: [your MyCourses/eCommons username (case-sensitive)]*
Password: [your MyCourses/eCommons password (case-sensitive)]*
Check off the following: Refresh All Contents

*Note: If you are a new user of eCommons/MyCourses or if you do not remember your eCommons/MyCourses username and password, you must go to either eCommons website (http://ecommons.med.harvard.edu/) or MyCourses website (http://mycourses.med.harvard.edu/) to sign up for or find out what is your username and password for the MyCourses portal. Just click on the link, LOGIN PROBLEMS, and follow the instructions.

Step 8: Re-Synchronize & View HMS MyCourses Mobile Site!

1. Re-synchronize by tapping on the HotSync button on your PDA cradle.

2. Tap the Applications icon (Figure 1) on your PDA. Select the AvantGo icon (Figure 2). The HMS MyCourses Mobile channel will appear as below (Figure 7).
