Mobile / PDA - Install AvantGo - WindowsCE

This step-by-step document shows you how to install AvantGo Enterprise software on your Windows CE Pocket PC from a Windows-based personal computer (PC). Please read all of the steps carefully as they are all important. If you encounter a problem during installation, please contact the Student Computing Support Desk by filling out an online form.

Note: Student Computing is unable to provide support for Windows CE installations in the Tosteson Medical Education Center. This document assumes that you already have an Internet connection.

Step 1: Connect Your Windows CE Cradle to Your Windows-Based PC

1. Connect your Windows CE cradle to your computer. (Follow Compaq's instructions.)

2. Place your Windows CE in its cradle with its power turned off.

Step 2: Install Microsoft ActiveSync onto Your PC

1. Download the latest Microsoft ActiveSync at ActiveSync 3.7.1 onto your PC.

2. Double-click msasync.exe icon to install the software.

3. Follow the instructions of the ActiveSync Setup Wizard.

4. Click Next when the Get Connected dialog box pops up as below:

5. Turn your Windows CE power on while it is in its cradle.

6. Tap the Start Menu and highlight Programs on your Windows CE

7. Click on the Connections folder.

8. Tap the ActiveSync icon.

9. Choose USB as the method to connect to the selected desktop computer.

10. Tap the Connect button to locate the connection agent.

11. Check off Disconnect when complete in the Connections Status dialog box.

12. Launch ActiveSync on your PC.

Step 3: Create a Partnership with your Windows CE and PC

1. Select Yes to synchronize information between your device and computer.

2. Select Yes again to synchronize information with only your computer.

3. Make sure that AvantGo Connect is checked off under Synchronization Settings.

4. Click Finish. An initial synchronization will take place and complete as below:

Step 4: Install AvantGo Enterprise for Windows CE onto Your PC

1. Download the AvantGo Enterprise Software (http://mymobile.med.harvard.edu:8091/shared/help_ce_dl.html) and save it to your PC.

2. Double-click on the AvantGo Connect Installer icon to set up AvantGo Connect.

3. Click Yes to install AvantGo Connect and other pending installations using the default application install directory.

4. Click OK to the Application Downloading Complete dialog box. NOTE: You will see an AvantGo icon as an added program to your Windows CE screen under Programs in the Start menu.

Step 5: Configure the AvantGo Software on Your PDA

1. Tap the Start menu and highlight Settings... on your Windows CE.

2. Tap the Connection tab and then the PC icon.

3. Check off Automatically synchronize when serial cable is connected, using.... Choose USB in the pull down menu.

4. Click OK in the top right corner of your Windows CE screen.

5. Next, click on the AvantGo Connect icon on your Windows CE.

6. Tap the Add... button.

7. Type in correctly the following information:

Hostname: mymobile.med.harvard.edu
Port: 8092
Username: [your MyCourses/eCommons username (case-sensitive)]*
Set Password...: [your MyCourses/eCommons password (case-sensitive)]*
Check off the following: Connect to this server and Refresh all content at next sync.

*Note: If you are a new user of eCommons/MyCourses or if you do not remember your eCommons/MyCourses username and password, you must go to either eCommons website (http://ecommons.med.harvard.edu/) or MyCourses website (http://mycourses.med.harvard.edu/) to sign up for or find out what is your username and password for the MyCourses portal. Just click on the link, LOGIN PROBLEMS, and follow the instructions.

8. Tap OK in the top right corner of your Windows CE screen.

9. Tap OK again in the top right corner of your Windows CE screen.

Step 6: Resynchronize to Add MyCourses onto Your Windows CE

1. Place your Windows CE in its cradle. Re-synchronization will automatically take place.

2. Click Yes to install AvantGo Connect and other pending installations.

3. Re-synchronize once more to download the webpages from MyCourses server. Downloading will automatically disconnect on your Windows CE.

4. Make sure that you choose the correct server (e.g., AvantGo Server (eCommons_username)) by clicking the up-arrow on the toolbar at the bottom of the Windows CE screen.

5. Tap the Start menu and then highlight Programs.

6. Tap the AvantGo icon to view MyCourses Mobile.
